The types of wire ropes are divided according to their uses: ropes for suspension bridges and mining strands, carrying ropes for overhead ropeways, traction ropes for transmission devices, ropes for elevators, tie ropes for tying and towing goods, etc. The variety of wire rope is increasing, the structure is becoming more and more complex, in addition to the use of a variety of coated steel wire, but also the use of stainless steel wire and bimetal wire.
In order to ensure the safety and reliability of the wire rope, the wire rope is required to have sufficient strength, good flexibility, compaction, compression resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue strength, among which strength is the most important.
The cross-sectional structure of the wire rope is a little contact round strand, line contact round strand, surface contact round strand, special-shaped strand, single-layer strand does not rotate, sealed and flat, etc. The surface contact round strand wire rope is made by drawing the wire contact strand through the wire drawing die or roller die by the traction force of the twisting machine. Through drawing dies, there are two anti-corrosion measures: oiling and plating in the cross-sectional twisted strands before and after the deformation of the rope strands.

All wire ropes must be oiled. The fiber core is impregnated with oil, which is required to protect the fiber core from decay and rust, moisten the fiber, and lubricate the wire rope from the inside.
The surface is oiled so that all steel wire surfaces in the rope strands are evenly coated with a layer of anti-rust lubricating grease. For mine ropes with friction lifting and large mine water, black oil grease with strong abrasion and water resistance should be coated. Other uses are coated with red oil grease with strong film properties and good rust resistance, and require a thin oil layer to keep clean during operation.
Plating
Galvanized, aluminized, coated nylon or plastic, etc. Galvanizing is divided into thin coating of steel wire before plating and thick coating of steel wire after drawing. The mechanical properties of thick coating are lower than those of smooth steel wire rope, so it should be used in severe corrosion environment.
Galvanized steel wire rope is more corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant and heat-resistant than galvanized steel wire rope. It is mainly used for fishing trawl ships and mines containing H2S. It is produced by the first plating and then drawing method. Wire ropes coated with nylon or plastic are divided into two types: coated rope and coated strand-coated rope. The former is used for static cables and the latter for moving cables.
